About Us

Students Teaching English our World (STEW) is a Monash University student club that envisions to empower refugees and migrant adults through education. STEW provides free one-on-one English tuition in suburbs around Melbourne, particularly in the Dandenong region.

In addition to helping migrants and refugees overcome the language barriers they face in Australia, volunteers may help their English students with skills required for day-to- day activities, such as taking public transport, using an ATM or learning emergency phone numbers. Volunteers are encouraged to help teach English in creative ways.

STEW works in collaboration with AMES (Adult Multicultural Education Services) which runs a compulsory six session training course for volunteers. Training is provided free of charge and is conducted on campus at Monash. AMES matches up volunteers with a migrant or refugee adult. While the majority of English students are Afghan women, students come from a range of backgrounds including Iraq, India, Somalia, China, Vietnam and Korea.
